AIR (DOMESTIC)
Transportation - Air Domestic
Japan is covered by an extensive domestic air network, which is served by
All Nippon Airways
(ANA) and
Japan Airlines
(JAL), together with a number of smaller carriers. If you are on a tight schedule, domestic flights can be a practical alternative to rail travel, particularly on longer journeys or on routes that are not covered by Japan's vast network of high-speed trains. For shorter trips however, the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) is often quicker than flying when you consider the additional journey time required for airport transfers and check-in.
AIRPORT ACCESS
Visitors arriving in Japan at Narita Airport (Tokyo) who intend to connect to a domestic flight may need to transfer to Haneda Airport in Tokyo's south. Whilst transportation between Narita and Haneda is very convenient, the airports are about two hours apart and it is important to make sure that you have plenty of time to make your connection. See the Airport section of this site for more information on airport access.
RESERVATIONS AND SCHEDULES
Flight reservations can be made by contacting the airlines directly, or through your travel agent or
tour operator
.
Flight schedules are available at the airline web sites listed below.

All Nippon Airways
DISCOUNTED AIR PASSES
For visitors who don't have a Japan Rail Pass and who are planning a number of longer journeys during their stay, domestic airfares often compare favourably with the cost of catching the shinkansen bullet trains. There are also a variety of discounts available to help make flying within Japan even better value for money.
Available discounts include:
Japan Airlines (JAL)
Japan Airlines (JAL) - oneworld Yokoso/Visit Japan Fare - this must be purchased in conjunction with JAL or an oneworld carriers international ticket, prior to departure for Japan. Passengers can choose to buy between one and five domestic sectors, with each sector costing ¥10,000 (exclusive of the ¥500 per sector tax). The fare is subject to restricted periods of travel. Contact JAL for further information.
All Nippon Airways (ANA)
All Nippon Airways (ANA) offers special discount domestic fares for overseas travellers on ANA and Star Alliance Partner Carriers. The Star Alliance Japan Airpass must be purchased outside Japan and is available to holders of a valid international ticket to or via Japan. Passengers can choose to buy between one and five domestic sectors, with each sector costing ¥11,500 (exclusive of ¥550 per sector tax). This represents a saving up to 71% on some routes. The fares are subject to restricted periods of travel. Contact ANA for further information.
Both JAL and ANA offer significant discounts on the cost of a standard domestic fare if you purchase your domestic flight in conjunction with your international ticket on the respective airline.
Contact the airlines directly for further information about discounts on domestic flights.
